Photoshoot with Parker and Sonya

Ffiona Erskine of Ffire photography did a photoshoot recenlty with Parker and Sonya which resulted in many beautiful photos.  Sonya also did a mini photoshoot with Aaron while he was over there, which I have included one of Parker on the Sydney waterfront.  Check out the link here for a few of the beautiful photos that Ffiona took!

This has helped to inspire me to update Parker's web page that I created for him and Sonya - check it out at this link here.

9 year old Megan sisters still doing well!

Following my calendar communication with the darwyn pet owners, I heard back from 2 couples that have 9 year old litter sisters (2 separate couples) - both of these girls are called Megan!

The dam of these girls was born in my first litter and she (Tessa) was my first home-bred champion.

The Megan sisters live in Victoria, go to almost every Victoria and Nanaimo area welshie walk, and are well known in their communities.  Their owners have become very good friends and the dogs now are affectionally referred to as "the sisters".  I actually have always gotten a number of updates from these folks throughout the year, along with a few other people that have my dogs in that area,  that have all become good friends with each other.  And me too.  :)
This photo of "the sisters" was taken last month at a get-together of 6 couples that have dogs from me.
When I think of the Megan sisters, and the others that are part of this close knit group (Lily, Haley, Becky, Mandi), and the families that love them, it makes me realise that as a breeder, we can do so much more than simply breed beautiful, healthy, well socialized dogs ... here is proof that we can also help bring other people together, in some cases, where strong and lasting friendshps are built and made.  All it takes is to do the introductions of people that have similar interests and close proximity.  The friendships that I have made, and have helped to create, mean a lot to me.

Thank you to everyone for your kindness, support and love of the dogs that I have placed in your care.

TJ is a star!

TJ at the groomers (click here)
After doing my 2013 custom Darwyn Calendar, I sent out an email to every Darwyn pet owner, since my first litter was born in early 2001 - about 100!  A tedious exercise as I did individual emails, but very worthwhile.  In response, I have received some truly wonderful stories and updates from these awesome pet owners.  I will try to post a few of them here.
To start, this boy TJ (a Parker & Paisa son) lives in Burnaby and has just finished an advanced obedience class.  His claim to fame is that he is featured on the front page of his groomers website! (click here)

The photo to the right is when he first went to his new home.  The groomer is right - TJ is a beautiful welshie!  And, by the sounds of it, a smart one too in a great home.

2013 Custom Darwyn Calendar now available!

I have included all new photos in my 2013 calendar.  Pictures (primarily from this year) include:
  • Parker is shown in a beautiful photo on the waterfront on one of the beaches around Sydney Australia with his co-owner, Sonya;
  • a few photos of Joe's "kids" having fun with us this past summer - Trooper and Java on various beaches and Tina in our boat;
  • Gracie and Zorro are shown in our garden;
  • Monty is as high as he can get in our 1 snowfall of the year during 2012!
  • Joe has a couple of professional photos to show him off!
I used mostly fun photos, and a couple of professional photos of our top dog Joe, in this years calendar.  While I have lot's of awesome show ring photos, I wanted this year's calendar to be about how we also enjoy our dogs outside of the show ring.

Anyone can order one (click here) - so if you want to, go ahead. I know it is early - but here's hoping that 2013 is a good year all round for all of my friends and family!

Trooper on the beaches near Long Beach, BC (Cox Bay)
That was so much fun, going back over some of the awesome times we had during this year!

Darwyn Welsh Terriers - Montgomery 2012: Best of Breed!

American Grand Champion Darwyn Esmeralda in Sanherpinc was BEST OF BREED 2 out of the 4 days for the weekend of Montgomery County Kennel Club - both days were Welsh Terrier Club of America specialties!  Specifically, Hatboro I and Hatboro II (2012).

These picture were taken by myself (Larisa Hotchin) on the Friday show of Hatboro.  I was thrilled to be there, to watch and to be able to take pictures of this beautiful girl, presented flawlessly.
We are so proud of this wonderful accomplishment. There were many really beautiful Welsh Terriers in the ring those days, both in the classes, and other specials.  I am honoured to be Emme's breeder, along with Mr. Bruce Schwartz.

Much appreciation to judges Mr. Geir Flyckt-Pedersen and Mr. Vesa Lehtonen of Finland, both are considered to be very accomplished terrier judges.

We are very honoured and proud.  Thank you.  To read a bit more about Emme, click here.

Monty has his own web page now! GCh Am/Can Darwyn Bruhil's Flying Circus

After watching Monty's littermate, Emme, win BOB 2x over Montgomery County Kennel Club weekend (click here for one of the days at Hatboro), I got motivated to do Monty's page on my website.  Monty is a WTCA National Specialty winner himself, from MCKC 2011.  I decided to do a page for Emme as well.

I am forever grateful to Bruce Schwartz for his vision and co-breeding these lovely welsh with me, Santiago for selling Bruce and I their lovely mother Paisa, and to Bob of the New Husken Welsh Terriers in the Netherlands for helping me make this breeding to his beautiful dog, Bill, happen.
Thank you.

Darwyn Welsh Terriers - Montgomery 2012: Java

Java (Darwyn's Special Blend) - my 6 month old Joe x Dora son, made his show ring debut a long ways from home - at the Welsh Terrier Club of America National Specialty in Pennsylvania at Montgomery County Kennel Club.  He was 1st in his class each day, and in the sweepstakes, under breeder judge, Ms. Kathleen Rost, he was Best of Opposite Sex (click here for results)!

To read more about Mr. Java, click here.
More will be added as he is such a fun dog and Michael and I have done some really fun trips with him this past summer. I'll try to transfer some of those photos from Facebook onto my website over time.
Stay tuned about this promissing puppy!

Happy 11th Birthday to K-See: one of 2 foundation bitches for Darwyn

Happy 11th birthday to K-See:  BISS Am/Can Ch Saredon Chasing Secrets.
She's living a wonderful life up in Alaska with a family that runs a fishing lodge.  She enjoys guests in the summer, and runs on the beach (practically her own beach) most of the year around.  I am so happy that I am friends with her lovely owner and I would happily give Katie another retired Darwyn welsh.
K-See's legacy was not only in top show wins (including Montgomery weekend, 2003, and wins with me owner-handled by the late, but great, Annie Clark), but also in her offspring.  Her "kids" that are still either showing, or still in-tact are Dora,  Donny and Zorro (click on their names for details), and up and coming are Jessie and Ella.  She's even represented well by a couple of young boys that are her grandchildren - Java who was very well received at Montgomery 2012 as a 6 month old puppy, and MJ, who is now in Germany.
From all of us at Darwyn, we wish you a wonderful birthday!

Darwyn Welsh Terriers - Montgomery 2012: Jessie

One of Zorro's litter sister's, Jessie, was also shown on MCKC weekend.  Jessie - Darwyn Jesterr's Holding Court, was conditioned and presented by her co-owner, Jane Erdman and is also a Monty x Dora daughter.
Jane was the only owner-handler in the Open Bitch class, the rest were top Terrier Professional Handlers.  It was a very tough class with some beautiful examples of our breed being presented.  The fact that Jane was "in the ribbons" on Montgomery day was wonderful!  With everything Jane has gone through over this past 6 months, to also get Jessie into coat condition and brought to the specialty was very special.  I got to see a lot of Jessie on the weekend and Jane sure loves her.  The photo above shows how well Jane presented her .... made me a very proud breeder.
It's not just the winning, in this case participation was truly a wonderful thing.

Darwyn Welsh Terriers - Montgomery 2012: Zorro

Zorro was Reserve Winners Dog at Hatboro!
My 18 month old Monty x Dora son (each were MCKC 2011 top winners) was conditioned and presented by Ernesto Lara and his team for the MCKC 2012 weekend.
Click here to see a few photos that I took.
He is just a young boy, but it was wonderful to watch his effortless movement, see his pretty profile on the self-stack and table, and his confident and attentive (but not over the top) attitude.
Ernesto has him in absolutely beautiful condition!  I just need to get used to seeing a different head trim that Ernesto does (who was classically trained by Mr. Peter Green in this area), vs. Wood Wornall, who has previously handled many of my dogs over Montgomery weekend.
I like what I saw last weekend, and I loved Ernesto's set-up and enjoyed being with his team.

ZORRO! - Darwyn Don Diego de la Vega - first US points

Zorro attended his first show with other Welsh Terrier competition yesterday and was awarded Best of Breed!  Today there were more dogs entered and he was BOB again for his first major!  Click here for details.

Otherwise known as Canadian Champion Darwyn Don Diego de la Vega, Zorro was shown for 3 weekends last spring in Canada, in a very new/short coat to see if he would enjoy the show ring.  He did - and does!  He did pretty well at those shows - completed his Canadian Championship with a couple of Group 1st wins (amongst some other very nice terriers).
Today's win in Virgina (click here for details) was his first major.  This was his 2nd time in the ring with other Welsh Terriers - 8 entered (yesterday he was also BOB).  What a wonderful way for him to enter the US show rings.  I am so proud.

After he finished in Canada, we decided that we would like others in the US to see our "Monty and Dora" son (since they both did so well at Montgomery 2011).  So, Zorro went to Ernesto Lara to be conditioned for next weekends shows in PA - otherwise known as Montgomery County Kennel Club (MCKC) shows, which includes the leading up shows of Hatboro I, II and Devon.  These 4 shows are also the Welsh Terrier Club of America (WTCA) National Specialties.  Clearly Zorro enjoys his new handler and they are working well as a team!
I fly out next week to watch, while Michael will hold the fort at home (thank you!) .... really looking forward to seeing everyone, the dogs, and most importantly, Zorro and his litter sister Jessie!

US Best in Show!

Canine Chronicle, has posted Joe's Best in Show win, with a couple of nice candid photos (the ones shown here).

This is a big milestone for Darwyn Welsh Terriers.

  * I have co-owned a welsh terrier that has received multiple (5) US All-Breed Best in Shows.
  * I have bred a few that have received this top honour in Canada.
  * Joe is now my first home-bred US All-Breed Best in Show winner.
Much appreciation to Mrs. Barbara Dempsey Alderman for the Group Win and Mr. Mark Houston-McMillan for this historic Best in Show Award.

This show, while relatively out of the way in Montana, was a very competitive show (just like how some of the smaller shows in Canada can sometimes be the most competitive).  In fact, a number of the top dogs in the US were in attendance at this show - including the #2 dog, all-breeds, the multi BIS winning GWP pictured below.  Also on this weekend, Joe (GCh Am / Can Ch Darwyn's I'm Not Arguing That) won 2 Terrier Group 1st wins - so now he has 8 Group Wins in the US and 138 career Group Wins overall - and now 29 Best in Shows, of which 1 is in the US.  :)

Click here for the Canine Chronicle details of the wins.

As you can see by the photos (and results), Joe is in beautiful condition and happy.  This is because of his dedicated handlers.  Both Milton Lopes (pictures in the ring) and Ash Oldfield (above) work together on him - in fact, I understand that in the last few months, it is Ash that is doing a lot of Joe's coat work, and together they do finishing touches.  That's teamwork!
Thank you both for keeping Joe looking so good and so happy!

New Australian Champion with Reserve Best in Show!

We are very proud to announce that Parker is now also an Australian Champion!  Pending paperwork (of course!  :)
As you can see from the photo, it was a very happy day for everyone.  In the photo, Parker's co-owner Sonya is on the left, one of the 5 Group Judges awarding Parker is in the middle, and Aaron Andriash (Parker's handler from his 2010 shows, is on the right (he flew out to Australia to work with Sonya for a couple of weeks).

Parker is now:
* Best in Specialty (WTCA National at Montgomery BOB);
* Best in Show (all-breed Canada)
* Reserve Best in Show (RUBIS), Australia
* Multiple Group Winner (US, Canada, Australia)
* #1 Welsh Terrier and #8 Terrier overall (Canada, 2010)
* Westminster Kennel Club AOM
* Finished his championship in all 3 countries with top wins from 'the classes'

Sonya (his co-owner in Australia) took Parker to his first show a few weeks ago and picked up almost 1/2 of the 100 points that Parker needed to become an Australian Champion, which included 1 Group Win.  Aaron Andriash, who showed Parker for Michael and I in Canada during 2010, flew over to Australia and spent a couple of weeks with them, attending 1 show weekend.  During this weekend, Parker was awarded Terrier Group 1st (BIG) 4 times and a Reserve Best in Show (RUBIS)!

It was clear that Parker remembered exactly who Aaron was, and was super excited to see and spend time with him again.  And, from all of the photos, clearly Sonya had Parker in absolutely beautiful condition.

In just 3 weekends, Parker is now (Sep 23/2012) the #2 Welsh Terrier in Australia - wow!  Click here for details.
OR
click here for details of Parker's Group and RUBIS wins in Australia.

Life can turn in odd ways sometimes, ways that one cannot predict.  I am very happy with the fork in this road that presented itself to me, and Parker is clearly benefiting by being in a truly loving home - as well as the attention and fun getting back into the show ring that he LOVES!

Good luck and remember to keep having fun!

JOE - Best in Show in the US - WOW!

The details are on one of my favorite US Dog Show Blogs:
CLICK HERE to see the exciting details!

It's been close to 2 years since Joe has gone to a regular AKC dog show (other than Westminster Kennel Club in New York) - so far this weekend, he has won both Terrier Groups and today he was awarded BEST IN SHOW, while many of the US's top dogs were there (including the GWP, which is the #2 dog, among all breeds!).

Joe is a pretty darn special dog ... so far 28 Best in Shows in Canada, an AKC all-breeds Best in Show in the, many Group 1st wins in both countries, BOB at a Welsh Terrier Club of America Specialty, multiple Best in Terrier Specialties, Group placements on both Montgomery County (MCKC) and Eukanuba/AKC Invitational weekends (US), Top 10 dog (all-breeds) for 2011 and 2012 and #1 Terrier in Canada (2012) ... and he started out as a puppy to be awarded such things as Best Puppy in Show and Bred By Group placements at the Northern California Terrier Specialty.

This boy has surpassed my wildest dreams as a breeder.  I have owned another US BIS Welsh Terrier, but this win today is just a bit different .... I bred this boy.  He was a singleton and I raised him, trained him and played with him as a puppy and young dog.  Hard to describe - but being awarded a Best in Show at an AKC all-breed show, with such top competition in attendance (Milton is used to that - since in Canada, he seems to always be at the shows that have the top dogs at!) is a living dream.

Another 2 US Welsh Terrier Specialty Wins!

Last month I attended a US Welsh Terrier Regional Breed Specialty (WSWTC) and brought 2 Welsh Terriers - Dora and Trooper.  Dora, who was Winner Bitch (and AOM from the classes) at the WTCA National Specialty at Montgomery last October, and who had her second litter a few months ago, was awarded Best of Breed.  So, she is now officially BISS Am Ch. Darwyn's Dora the Explorer!  Admittedly, Dora wasn't quite in the same coat condition she was in last October, but the breeder-judge, Mr. RC Williams of the well-known La Sierra Welsh Terriers of California didn't seem to have a problem finding her and giving her this award.

I also brought with me a young dog, Trooper --  Darwyn Here for a Good Time.  This was his second show, and I put him in to see how he would do and to support the club.  He did very well, going Best of  Winners at the Breed Specialty and multiple times on the weekend for his first points.  He still looks like a young dog, and like his sire, I think he will be best in a year or so ... so, for now, he will only go to the odd show and mostly just enjoy being a dog at home with us.

Many thanks to Mr. Williams for these breed specialty wins, and to Barb Decker and the rest of the show committee for organizing this wonderful annual event.  If I did not have to rush home due to a dog at the vet in surgery, I would have stayed for the wonderful dinner and silent auction ... next year I'll be there for sure!

In fact Michael and I just got back from a vacation to Long Beach/Tofino area and have many wonderful photos of this boy playing on the beach and enjoying boat rides ... stay tuned!

Darwyn Welsh Terrier now in Germany

After spending a wonderful week at our home with Regina Schmid, of vom Granitfelsen Welsh Terriers, we decided to send one of our young boys home with her to live in Germany for a while.

We had a wonderful visit.  We spent time learning from each other about shows and breeding, playing with dogs, exploring the area and developing the basis for a good friendship.  Even Parker's new co-owner, Sonya, joined in (via long-distance) trying out her new language skills!  For myself, I relied on technology (I came to love Google Translate!)

Given that they have worked with some of the top breeders around the world, I was thrilled that she really liked what she saw here, both of my adults and my couple of young ones growing up.  So much so that she convinced me to loan her one that I had very high hopes for - a Joe and Dora son.

MJ -- Darwyn's Mighty Joe Young

I am sure you will be hearing more about MJ - on here, in Europe, and for sure on Facebook!  For now, he is just getting used to his new girls, the German Black Forest and his new family with Regina and Xaver.  :)

Good luck - have fun and see you soon!  xxooxxooxx

Earthdog trials in Vancouver area - Sept 8/9 2012

If you have a terrier and are interesting and seeing their natural instincts 'kick-in' for what they were originally bred to do, then I encourage you to check out the next  Earthdog event this weekend.  Or just go to watch!
4 CKC Sanction Earthdog Trials with all tests (IQ, JE, SE, ME) are being held in Langley on Sept 8 and 9.  Click here for details.
I know of one very keen "Darwyn" Welsh Terrier that will be in attendance.  This will be the 2nd (maybe 3rd) Earthdog event for these owners of a 7.5 year old welshie.  After the last event, they did a nice write-up for me which I will post after this one.
I know a lot of people across North America that participate in their local trials and have an awesome time. I also know of a Scottie owner from Calgary that is flying out for this weekends test.  To me that is a stamp of approval on just how well run she expects this trial to go.
Go have some fun with your terrier!  In a safe way, of course.  :)

Parker is now a group winner in 3 countries!

BIS/BISS Am.Can. CH Darwyn's Webslinger (Parker)
Handler:  Sonya Cornick (co-owner, Australia)

Parker (BIS/BISS Am/Can Ch Darwyn's Webslinger) has now dipped his paw into the Australian show rings.  Based on feedback he has been very well received by judges, exhibitors and spectators.  He is "piloted" beautifully by his Australian co-owner, Mrs. Sonya Cornick.

In their first weekend out together, Sonya presented Parker and was awarded a significant Group 1st Win!  The group was judged by terrier specialist judge and Airedale Terrier breeder, Miss Rebecca Preece-Harvey.  115 terriers in the ring in NSW was not a small show - woo hoo!
Click here for a link to these show results (Terriers are Group 2 in Australia)

Parker has clearly fit into Sonya's home well and is loved very much.  He is now making it fun for Sonya to get back into the show ring.

Good friends are hard to come by, and we are very happy to share Mr. P with them.

I can't wait to see Sonya again at MCKC in a few weeks time - both of us travelling to the eastern US!  You see ... Sonya first saw Parker at MCKC 2009 when he won BOB at the WTCA National Specialty from the classes!  During MCKC 2011 weekend, after much contemplation, I made the decision to offer him to go to Australia.  This Montgomery, we will be watching beautiful dogs, learning (as always) and toasting to Sonya and Parker's success.  I am so happy this has all come together so nicely.  If you are in NSW/Australia and see them, please say Hi for me, and give Parker a little cuddle.

We wish Sonya and Parker continued success and enjoyment.

Dylan goes to the National Agility Championship Trials!

Dylan
U-CDX Darwyn Hotspur CDX, RX, AgX, AgXJ, MADC,MJDC, AGDC, ISDs, RL3, CRN, MCL, JE, CGN
Peggy and 9 year old Dylan were invited (and attended) the 2012 Canadian National Agility Trials and came in 15th!
Just to be invited is pretty darn awesome.  To get qualifying scores is even better (especially on a super hot weekend).  And, to finish in the top 20  -- WOW!
A lot of hard work went into this team getting there.

To be Dylan's breeder is very humbling when I see them working together.  They have top scores in many types of events whether it is in Rally-O, Obedience, Earthdog, or Agility.  If she had any interest in conformation there is no doubt in my mind he would have easily been a conformation champion as well.  I bow to Peggy's determination, efforts and successes.  The fact that Dylan is the most titled Welsh Terrier in Canadian history leaves me speechless.

Emma Kesler, a local welshie owner, friend, and very talented artist, photographer and writer, attended this event.  She took this photo and wrote a wonderful blog post.

Click here to go to Emma's blog post.

Click here to go to Peggy and Dylan's web page on my Darwyn Website.

I am not sure what is next for this team, perhaps it is more earthdog, or to finish the Utility Level obedience that they have already started, or further Rally-O trials, or more agility (or all of the above!).  I do know that they bring joy to each others lives, and as his breeder, this is my ultimate reward.

Here is a photo that I took of Dylan performing at a Masters Level Agility trial during 2010 - he was so happy doing this!

Darwyn gets top Terrier awards for both 2010 and 2011

BC All Terrier Club Perpetual Trophies (dating back to the '60s)
Top Terrier of the Year
Top Terrier shown in BC
Top Owner-Bred Terrier
Larisa Hotchin of 'Darwyn' was awarded these 3 top trophies for both 2010 and 2011
I have not written about the various awards that "Darwyn" has recieved over the years, and I will start compiling that list (specifically club awards from the Welsh Terrier Club of America and the BC All Terrier Club).
For now I will just reference the above 3 perpetual trophies for Top Terrier of the Year, Top Terrier shown in BC and Top Owner-Bred.  They are from the BC All Terrier Club, and have dogs dating back to the '60s. Click here to see all of the 2011 award recipients.

I am honoured that one of my dogs, Joe, (MBIS, MBISS, GCh Am & Can Ch Darwyn's I'm Not Arguing That) received 3 of the top awards for 2011 -- Top Terrier of the Year, Top Terrier shown in BC and Top Owner-Bred!

It is also thrilling that last year, another one of my dogs, Parker, (BIS, BISS, Am & Can Ch. Darwyn's Webslinger) was awarded these same 3 top awards for 2010 results

Joe continued his show career during 2012, and is currently the #1 Terrier for all of Canada and the #4 dog amongst all breeds!  Parker recently went to Australia, and he is expected to make his show debut sometime this fall.

I am one that believes that our history is important - I have compiled the historical Top Terrier of the Year recipients for our club for the inception of the "big trophy" - click here to see history and check out what breed used to be in the terrier group - you'll have to look at the award winner from 1969!  I will compile other trophy winners when I get a chance.

Happy 1st birthday to Joe and Paisa's kids!

Griffin
1 year old today and enjoying a wonderful life with his family!
I do not ship puppies very often -- unless it is to extra special people -- Griffin (above & right) is with one of those families.
Griffin and his siblings turn 1 year old today and it makes me so happy to see how integral he is with his family.
He has 2 littermates that are in process of getting ready to make an appearance in the show ring, and when they do, I am positive that they will make their sire (Joe) and their dam (Paisa) very proud.  They aren't in top show coat yet, but the nice (unsolicited) comments are already coming!

Happy Birthday Griffin & Jason & Trooper & Tina!

Record Breaker - Record Maker - Joe!

Joe!
Multi Best in Show & Specialty Winning
American Grand Champion & Canadian Champion
Darwyn's I'm Not Arguing That

Joe is the top winning Welsh Terrier in Canadian history!

He surpassed the previous record holder for the number of Best in Shows a few months ago - he now has received 21 BIS awards!  The previous record holder is a beautiful dog from back east that received 13 Bests quite a number of years ago.  Joe has also surpassed the other record holder for the total number of dogs defeated, with Joe's record currently standing around 10,000 (and the year is only half over).

The bar has definitely been raised (and still rising) for sure!  One day I will try to have another one defeat his records, but for now, we are just enjoying the ride.  Below are 2 of Joe's recent BIS wins - conditioned and presented with perfection by Milton Lopes (who, of course, has been Joe's main handler since Jan 2010).  I think you will agree with me that he and his partner Ash have Joe in top condition, and presented beautifully!  As always.

Currently Joe, with his 21 BISs and 117 career Group 1st wins, is Canada's #4 dog among all breeds for 2012 to date, which follows him being the #10 dog among all breeds in 2011.

The boys of Darwyn!

I tend to joke about the "Boys of Darwyn" (BTW, I love my girls here as well !! :) ... I have finally put together a summary page for significant boys bred here.  Given that I only have 1 or 2 litters a year, I am still shocked at how many significant dogs are on this page - and their significant wins in Groups, BISs and US breed specialties.  I am very fortunate.
I also have a couple of new puppy boys that I am pretty keen on, but, as always ... time will tell if they will make it onto the page or not!  :)

Zorro has his own web page now!

As usual, it has all of the typical "Darwyn" details - pedigree, DNA tests, OFA tests, baby pictures, fun pictures, show pictures and a little bit of insight into his wonderful, loving and fun personality!
