Darwyn Welsh Terriers - Montgomery 2012: Best of Breed!

American Grand Champion Darwyn Esmeralda in Sanherpinc was BEST OF BREED 2 out of the 4 days for the weekend of Montgomery County Kennel Club - both days were Welsh Terrier Club of America specialties!  Specifically, Hatboro I and Hatboro II (2012).

These picture were taken by myself (Larisa Hotchin) on the Friday show of Hatboro.  I was thrilled to be there, to watch and to be able to take pictures of this beautiful girl, presented flawlessly.
We are so proud of this wonderful accomplishment. There were many really beautiful Welsh Terriers in the ring those days, both in the classes, and other specials.  I am honoured to be Emme's breeder, along with Mr. Bruce Schwartz.

Much appreciation to judges Mr. Geir Flyckt-Pedersen and Mr. Vesa Lehtonen of Finland, both are considered to be very accomplished terrier judges.

We are very honoured and proud.  Thank you.  To read a bit more about Emme, click here.

Another 2 US Welsh Terrier Specialty Wins!

Last month I attended a US Welsh Terrier Regional Breed Specialty (WSWTC) and brought 2 Welsh Terriers - Dora and Trooper.  Dora, who was Winner Bitch (and AOM from the classes) at the WTCA National Specialty at Montgomery last October, and who had her second litter a few months ago, was awarded Best of Breed.  So, she is now officially BISS Am Ch. Darwyn's Dora the Explorer!  Admittedly, Dora wasn't quite in the same coat condition she was in last October, but the breeder-judge, Mr. RC Williams of the well-known La Sierra Welsh Terriers of California didn't seem to have a problem finding her and giving her this award.

I also brought with me a young dog, Trooper --  Darwyn Here for a Good Time.  This was his second show, and I put him in to see how he would do and to support the club.  He did very well, going Best of  Winners at the Breed Specialty and multiple times on the weekend for his first points.  He still looks like a young dog, and like his sire, I think he will be best in a year or so ... so, for now, he will only go to the odd show and mostly just enjoy being a dog at home with us.

Many thanks to Mr. Williams for these breed specialty wins, and to Barb Decker and the rest of the show committee for organizing this wonderful annual event.  If I did not have to rush home due to a dog at the vet in surgery, I would have stayed for the wonderful dinner and silent auction ... next year I'll be there for sure!

In fact Michael and I just got back from a vacation to Long Beach/Tofino area and have many wonderful photos of this boy playing on the beach and enjoying boat rides ... stay tuned!

Parker has arrived in Australia!

Parker (BIS/BISS Am & Can Ch. Darwyn's Webslinger) has arrived safe and sound in Australia!  He is now co-owned with a wonderful friend, Mrs. Sonya Cornick of Sydney in Australia.  Michael and I hope to visit this beautiful country sometime over the next couple of years.  If you want to follow them, I have created a webpage and I will try to keep it updated (click here).
Big hugs to my Montgomery Best of Breed winning boy!  I hope you have fun in both the show ring and playing on the beaches!

Dora & Joe had puppies!

We are very excited to announce that Dora (Am Ch Darwyn's Dora the Explorer) recently gave birth to 6 healthy puppies!  Dora is our girl that won Winners Bitch at the Welsh Terrier Club of America National Specialty at Montgomery County Kennel Club (PA, Oct/11).  She hasn't hit the show rings in Canada (yet), but when she eventually does, I'm sure we will have some fun!
The sire of this litter is our dog Joe - Multi Best in Show and Best in Specialty Show Grand Champion Am. & Can Ch. Darwyn's I'm Not Arguing That (who this weekend, got a HAT TRICK - 3 shows and 3 Group Wins -- WOW!).
We will place a couple of these boys in companion pet homes when they are 9 or 10 weeks old, but I am thinking that we might just grow up a few of these guys to see how they will look.
Everyone is doing very well - plump and happy and growing very nicely.  And mom .... well, she LOVES being a mom.  Dora is one of the best!

I finally updated Joe's web page with his Canadian show wins!

I finally updated Joe's web page with some "fast facts" for Joe's career to date, his Canadian show wins, and a link to the 2 videos I did of him at dog shows - one in the US on Montgomery weekend and one in Canada (first weekend out with Milton and Tracy).  It was neat to re-live these 2 days.  I enjoyed it - if you watch them, I hope you do also.

Click here to go to Joe's updated web page.

Click here for the video of Joe and Woody on Montgomery 2010 weekend.

Click here for the video of Joe on the first weekend out with Milton Lopes and Tracy Tuff.

A few facts:
* 6 Group WINS in the US! (California and Montgomery weekend)
* 39 Group Placements in the US!
* Many BOB wins in the US with other top Welsh Terriers in competition
* 2 BIS (in top competition)!
* 27 times in the ring in Canada in '11 - 26 Group Placements
* 12 Group WINS in Canada

I still have more to update.  I haven't put in any (except one) of his US photos - and they are good!

Congratulations to Fred & Patty for 6 healthy puppies sired by Monty!

One of my specials boys, Monty (Ch Darwyn Bruhil's Flying Circus) sired a second, healthy litter.  Olivia, the dam, is owned by WTCA members Fred and Patty Adams in Florida.  The puppies are now 3 weeks old (boy does time fly!) and all doing well.  Congratulations and good luck!  We'll be following your progress closely!

Click here for the web page that I put together for this litter (which includes the details for Fred and Patty's litter).  Monty's own web page has not yet been done (but it will be - I promise!).

Parker's OFA HIP X-RAY came back great!

For those that know me, know that I like to keep up on the health of my dogs, dogs that I breed, and tests where applicable (or appropriate).  The hip score (by x-ray) for some breeds is one of the recommended tests by breed clubs.  It's not with our breed, and therefore most Welsh Terriers breeders don't do it.

I'm on the fence about this one.  Some long time breeders tell me it is not an issue, while others are adamant that it is (or was).  The issue comes up occasionally on pet focused email lists.  In the last 36 years, 101 Welsh Terriers that had hip x-rays submitted to OFFA - 6% were "excellent" and 18% were "dysplastic" (click here for the link).  This clearly isn't representative for the breed - but it does say that hip dysplaysia can be seen in the breed.

I've decided to take the approach to test dogs that are living with me, over 2 years of age (min for the test), active part of my breeding program, and time permits. (note, it is much more difficult to arrange to do this if they are at dog shows every other weekend with a handler).  Given that this is not mandated by my breed club, I won't try to get 100% coverage, and I won't require bitches that want to breed to my dogs do this.  But, for my own interest, I will now have this test done on my important dogs in my breeding program.

A couple of years ago, Haley (Parker and Athena's dam) was one of my first ones to be done.  Her hips came back as Good (apparently, Excellent, Good and Fair are all just fine!).  Today I received the results in the mail that her son, Parker, BISS/BIS Am/Can Ch Darwyn's Webslinger also has "Good" Hip Scores!  Parker, of course, is my boy that won Best of Breed at the Welsh Terrier Club of America National Specialty, on Montgomery day in 2009 - and went on to be the #8 overall Terrier in Canada last year!  This year he is just hanging out with us at home, watching over some of his beautiful offspring that he sired with Paisa - MBIS Am/Can Ch Sanherpinc Paisa, and enjoying the AWESOME success of his 1/2 brother Joe - BISS/MBIS GCh Am & Can Ch Darwyn's I'm Not Arguing That, in the Canadian show ring this year (and US last year!).

Given the importance of this test for some breeds, OFFA has a public record for dogs that have been tested.  Click here for the OFFA link to Parker's OFA results.

My vet has the nifty x-ray machine that provides a digital output -- here are Parker's beautiful hips! (click on it to see a larger view)  :-)

So ... do we all need to go out and x-ray our dogs?  Not necessarily, however, it is something that as a breed, we should keep our eye on and watch out that we aren't going downhill and bringing those dysplastic ones into our breeding programs -- clearly they are in the breed ... somewhere!

Darwyn Welsh Terriers is an approved AKC Breeder of Merit!

I had read about this new AKC program and thought to myself that I do all of the things that they require .... click here for more information about the program.

I am active in the sport of purebred dogs (Canada and US), have titled many of the dogs that I have bred, am active in the Welsh Terrier Club of America, do more health testing (click here for OFFA) than any breed club for my breed requires, register all of my puppies, support people that have one of my dogs with education, and promote the breed - and our purebred dog community.

So, while I am Canadian, I applied.  There is no cost to join - but each application is vetted for merit.

Today I received a notice from the AKC that I was approved.  This won't change what I am doing, but perhaps it will help encourage others to also do the right things.

Wonderful week for Paisa's puppies!

Paisa and her 1 week old puppies - October 2009
Emme and Monty are in this happy pile!
This has been a very busy, but exhilarating and proud, week for me as a breeder.  This post is about Paisa's puppies that were born in Fall 2009 (MBIS Am/Can Ch Sanherpinc Paisa)
FIRST of all...
CONGRATULATIONS to the owners of Darwyn's Emerald in Sanherpinc!  Emme WON WINNERS BITCH and BEST OF WINNERS at the WELSH TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA NATIONAL SPECIALTY in Louisville, KY (USA) today for a 5-POINT MAJOR!

Emme (Monty's litter sister - click here for details) was bred by myself and Bruce Schwartz (from Paisa's first litter in Sept/09) and is owned by Santiago Pinto, Judith Anspach, Mary Duafala and Pam Allen.  I am THRILLED!

Here is a link to the results:  Welsh Terrier Club of America (floating) National Specialty; Louisville, KY (March 20, 2011) - click here!

I did not attend this weekend's show, but was kept 'in the loop' as to how Emme looked in her debut (YES - this was her first weekend out!).  I heard loud and clear that she had suberb ring presence, moved freely and easily (floated some even said!), 'to die for' coat and color, and a beautiful welshy head and expression!  Click this link for a picture of her (and others) at the Louisville show from yesterday, compliments of Eileen Lurker (Emme - Darwyn's Emerald in Sanherpinc is #48)

I am so proud of this girl - a beautiful Welsh Terrier for sure!  And, I am very thankful for her owners who have had the patience to show her when she was ready, and RC & Shari Carusi for the superb conditioning and presentation.  What a wonderful team - thank you all for presenting my baby so well!

Emme is the 12th Welsh Terrier that I have owned, or bred, that has won Winners Dog / Bitch (or higher) at a Welsh Terrier breed specialty in the US!

The SECOND exciting news here this week related to Paisa's first litter is that her son, Monty (Ch. Darwyn Bruhil's Flying Circus, a multiple Group Winner) sired his first litter -- 4 girls and 1 boy!  Everyone is doing very well.  I guess I need to do Monty's page on my website!  Monty started, and finished, his Canadian Championship at Canada's largest show (Lower Mainland Dog Fanciers) by winning the Terrier Group twice and was awarded Reserve Best in Show in October 2010!  I'll try to do that soon and then expand on this very exciting litter that was just born!

Stay tuned
